Studio Statement

My work begins with observation, but it is not driven by description.

I use landscape, figure, and still life as perceptual frameworks rather than subjects. Colour leads each painting, establishing structure, depth, and emotional register before form is resolved. Drawing is implied. Edges remain active. Brushwork stays visible.

I am interested in the moment when a place is recognisable but not fixed, when atmosphere overtakes certainty. This allows the viewer to enter the work through sensation rather than interpretation.

Although my imagery often references the South African landscape, the paintings are not about geography. They are about orientation, memory, and the instability of looking.

I work primarily in oil on canvas, allowing time, layering, and revision to remain visible within the surface.
